Saraki finally gives in to the EFCC but still maintains his innocence

After nearly two weeks of a back and forth with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, former Kwara Governor, Bukola Saraki, Monday, met with officials of the commission in Abuja.

Saraki, said to have reported at the commission Monday morning, also rendered an official statement to the anti-graft agency in line with the issues the commission are investigating him for.

According to the Vanguard, a team of the agency’s officials grilling the former governor on time at the helm of Kwara affairs and also, his work at the now defunct Societe General Bank of Nigeria.

The former governor, who is now a serving Senator, cleared the air on the allegations of embezzlement the commission made against him and insisted that he had no cause to be invited. For him, these issues had been investigated by the agency years ago.

As at press time, the lawmaker was still being questioned by the EFCC. It remained unclear if the commission would keep him overnight or grant him administrative bail on self recognition.

The commission had last week, said it will take all necessary measures to arrest and bring Saraki to justice over his activities as governor and as a director at the former bank.

The commission was apparently irked when the former governor denied receiving a July 25 invitation, sent through the Clerk of the National Assembly, requesting him to appear before it.

The former governor, who now heads the Senate Committee on Environment, had described his alleged refusal to honour the EFCC summon as a calculated attempt to tarnish his image.

Saraki maintains that there is nothing new for the EFCC to investigate about him, having carried out a similar probe between 2010 and 2012 without finding anything incriminating.
