Jesse Jackson Jr. Is Now Inmate No. 32451-016

The former congressman is serving his time at a North Carolina prison camp.

Jesse Jackson Jr. turned himself in at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina Tuesday morning to begin serving a 24-month sentence for the misuse of $750,000 in campaign funds.

According to a Chicago Tribune report, the disgraced ex-lawmaker has been assigned to the facility's minimum security camp, that houses approximately 332 inmates in a dormitory-style setting.

Jackson initially turned himself in Monday, but was sent away because of a paperwork snafu. He was accompanied by his wife, Sandi, who will begin her related 12-month term within 30 days of his release. The sentencing judge allowed them to serve at different times out of consideration for their young children who are 13 and 10.

Butner, the Tribune reports, has had in its custody a series of high-profile prisoners, including the Ponzi-scheming financier Bernard Madoff, currently serving time there, and the "blind Sheik" Omar Ahmad Rahman, who was convicted of plotting to blow up landmarks in New York City. Former Chicago police commander Jon Burge, accused of torturing African-American suspects to make false confessions, is another Butner inmate.
