As Nigerians mark the 20th anniversary of June 12, 1993 presidential election, which the late Chief MKO Abiola won, the lawmaker representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, has joined the rest of Nigerians to give the day a real recognition as the true Democracy Day in Nigerian history.
According to a statement through his Head of Media and Strategy, Mr Babatunde Adegunju, Ashafa said that the significant contributions of the late MKO Abiola to the enthronement of democracy in the country cannot be wished away.
Ashafa, who is the vice chairman, Senate Committee on Housing and Urban Development, also said Abiola made himself a sacrificial lamb for democracy to thrive in Nigeria.
“The late MKO Abiola sacrificed his life for Nigerian democracy to thrive. The courier was actually killed but the message can never be killed,” he added.
He enjoins everyone to continue the fight for justice, fair play and equity, and called on Nigerians to rededicate themselves to genuine democracy and work for a better Nigeria.
