China building new airport terminals in Lagos, P-Harcour

Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, CCECC, has started building new terminals at the Lagos and Port Harcourt international airports, southern Nigeria, aviation authorities said on Tuesday.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, said the new terminal in Port Harcourt is being constructed in addition to the on-going remodelling of the old terminal at the airport.

FAAN spokesperson, Yakubu Dati, said CCECC contractors have moved to the site with some equipment and have begun preliminary engineering works.

“The project is expected to be completed in one year according to the project engineer, Mr. Lee,” Dati said.

The same Chinese company also began work on the project at the Murtala Muhammed international airport in Lagos on Monday on a piece of land still in dispute.

The Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi had last week accused the ministry of aviation of neglecting Port Harcourt airport because of the rift between him and President Goodluck Jonathan.

But Dati said work is nearing completion at the old terminal which is used for both domestic and international flight operations.

He said contractors have redoubled their effort to meet the earlier deadline given them by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria for completion.

“Work on the international wing of the remodelling project has reached 90% completion while the domestic wing is about 60% completed,” Dati said.

He said when completed, the seating capacity of the remodelled terminal will be increased from 700 to 1500 while the toilet facilities will increase from 30 to 44.

“The Authority regrets the inconvenience airline passengers and operators still face at the Port Harcourt International Airport as a result of the on-going remodelling project at the airport and promises that this will soon give way to seamless operational services, for which all Nigeria would truly be proud,” Dati said.
